Betty Boop Funk

For this project I wanted to encorporate visuals and audio from old cartoons as well as other elements I produced myself to create a "cultural remix".  The first steps to my process were looking through various cartoons to find interesting sequences and sounds to loop and sample in order to create the beat.  After finding samples I liked, I loaded them onto a music production software I use called Maschine, and ultimatly created a beat that included various sounds and loops from various public domain videos.  After the beat was made, I edited the visuals on Adobe Premiere to make a short music video that syncs the cartoons visual cues to match with the audio cues of the beat I created.  Primarily looking at old "Betty Boop" cartoons, it was easy to find items to sample because of the lack of renewal, resulting in a surplus of her cartoons available in the public domain.  Created in the 1930's, Betty Boop was a very popular cartoon, acting as a symbol of bold sexuality and female power.  Creating this remix in the 21st century, the change of audience is aimed towards the younger and older generation.  With the mix of a hip hop based music genre with vintage Betty Boop motion pictures, my remix ultimatley pays tribute to a popular cartoon classic.
