Gathering Darkness: Beginning of a World War

Film Clips and radio broadcasts that portray the extent of Axis brutality during the first years of World War 2. Warning: Does contain graphic content.

The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a short and noisy introduction into the early years of World War 2. The war did not start out well at all for the allied powers and many people suffered years of oppression before the tide of the war turned. The full intent of this remix of radio broadcasts/video/ and battle sound effects is to attempt to recreate the feeling of being overwhelmed, unsure of what to make of what is happening beyond the obvious destruction.

Virtually all of my materials were located on Archive.net and intended for documentary use, to which I intended to keep that attitude. The radio broadcasts were designed to be listened to in sequence of events and the video is actually a collection of multiple events over the first years of the war. The original significance would seem that it is intended for those interested in studying the history of World War 2, which made it easier to use the content in a documentary style.

For the remix I laid over the radio broadcasts in sequence with the videos audio. I used Audacity to cut out nearly 8 hours of radio broadcasts to narrow it down to 3 minutes of audio and then laid it over the video using Movie Maker (Windows Product). The content changed little and if anything it became more of a documentary style after being remixed.

Changes I made after discussion were mainly bumping up the audio of the radio broadcasts.
